Burdett Hill Country Homes: Custom Homes
Committed to building quality residences and commercial structures with full consideration of the owners' needs and wishes . . .
Burdettt Hill Country Homes builds five or six custom homes a year in sizes that begin at about 1500 square feet of living area and go up to more than 5,000 square feet. Most of the homes are built within a 50-mile radius fo Marble Falls, and examples of their work can be seen all over the Texas Hill Country.
Each project comes with a full listing of features, to include items placed inside the walls. This painstakingly complete of set of specifications — right down to the type of studs and rafters — covers six pages of single-spaced type. If a change is sought later, it provides a point of reference for everyone involved.
It takes additional work to provide this level of specificity, but it saves confusion and potential discord later. It also fits in nicely with the "educate the buyer" approach to home building that the Burdett family has honed over the years.
Dan explains up front to each potential client that Burdett Hill Country Homes has no desire to be the cheapest builder available. Instead, they seek to deliver the best quality and overall value.
The lesson here is that a home built to last will prove a better value over time, which is how people use a home. We live in them over many years, perhaps for the rest of our lives. A home is one of the few purchases made that is expected to appreciate in value as the years pass.
Proud of their history of meeting deadlines, Burdett Hill Country Homes starts the project quickly and points to a dependable record of finishing prior to the scheduled completion date.
One reason behind the quick pace is that Burdett Hill Country Homes does their own site preparation, a common source of delay for other builders. They own all the needed heavy equipment, and Dan himself can be found performing the work on some of their jobs.
Dan stresses they create the same pads under their foundations for residential construction customers that are used for commercial jobs. The extra time spend compacting the soil pays off in a slab that doesn't settle later.
Burdett Hill Country Homes stresses the stability of the subcontractors used on their projects. The company can point to relationships with subcontractors that go back as long as 15 years. This stability of steady subcontractors includes firms started by tradesman who have worked directly for Burdett Hill Country Homes over the years. These long-standing business relationships extend beyond subcontractors to include other specialists that can make the custom home process less arduous. A client may come to the table with nothing more than ideas on a sketchpad for their dream home. Dan uses Delineations, Inc., a design firm in Burnet that, for a flat fee, helps turn those ideas into a reality. This saves money for clients that really don't need an architect for their project.
A final piece of guidance that Dan offers to prospective clients is to look for someone that is part of the community, both professionally and personally.
Burdett Hill Country Homes practices what it preaches in this regard. The company belongs to the Building Industry Association of the Highland Lake (BIA), the Texas Association of Builders (TAB) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). The Burdett family's involvement also goes far beyond passive membership into service as leadership.
Locally, the Burdett family is a fixture in Marble Falls' community life. For example, Buck has 32 years of perfect attendance at the Noon Rotary Club, and Dan as the president-elect of Daybreak Rotary Club. The family helps out with local affordable housing needs through both financial and labor contributions to the BIA's charity projects.
A builder that gives back to the local community demonstrates they intend to be there over the long haul. The homes they built yesterday are now owned by their friends and neighbors.
